Downsizing Made Easy

The thought of downsizing can be overwhelming, but I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be! There are many professionals that specialize in helping people streamline this process. Let’s break it down into four steps and which professionals can help along the way.

Choose your new location

There are a wide variety of options depending on your priorities. Some people may simply want a smaller house or condo to simplify their lives and lower their costs! Others might be looking for an active and social 55+ community. The best professional for helping you find either of these types of housing is a Realtor in your destination location.

Depending on your situation, you may require healthcare professionals to be integrated into your housing solution. Examples include communities that offer Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing, or Memory Care. In this case, a Senior or Special Needs Housing Consultant is your best bet. They are familiar with all the local options, what they cost, whether they have waiting lists, etc. The best part is that their fee is often paid by the care facility and is no extra cost to their clients!

Decide what you’re keeping and what you’re not

This can often feel like the most daunting task, but Professional Organizers are absolutely perfect for guiding you through this process, and many specialize in downsizing and moves. They will help you sort your belongings into categories such as Keep, Storage, Donate, Sell, and Recycle.

Make your move!

A good Moving Team, combined with your Professional Organizer, can literally pack everything up for you, move it into your new home, and help you unpack and arrange it all.

Sell or rent out your previous home

This comes back to working with a good Realtor, someone who can help you assess the equity in your home and make sure you get top dollar during the sale. Realtors and Property Managers can also give you estimates on what your home would rent out for if you decide to keep it. It might be worth exploring both options and discussing them with your Financial Advisor.

Regardless of what stage you're at in the process, we can help. We are connected to an extensive network of professionals who all work together to help our clients with downsizing. Reach out to us to schedule a consultation today!
