Considering Senior Living? What You Might Be Surprised to Learn
Many of my clients are seniors who need or want to downsize, along with their families who are helping them with the process. As a longtime real estate specialist in the Cambrian area of San Jose, I’ve helped many local families navigate this transition and have seen firsthand how many questions come up when senior living becomes part of the conversation.
I’ve discovered that many people are quite surprised at how senior housing works, what it costs, and the quality of their options when they start investigating. With the help of Senior Placement Advisor Mike Scoggin, owner of Inspired Senior Advisors, I’ve debunked three common myths about senior housing for you.
Myth 1: Senior “Homes” are horrible places to live and I don’t want to live alone.
A lot has changed over the years, and the negative stereotypes are quite outdated. Most contemporary Senior Living Communities are licensed to provide assisted living services in their apartments as residents’ needs change. Many of today’s communities offer dining, group activities, planned outings, and entertainment in a comfortable residential setting. Many couples and singles move in while they are fully independent and stay in the same apartment as their needs change - there's no need to move out even for long-term care (except for advanced dementia). Apartments are attractive with modern kitchenettes (some with full kitchens and washers & dryers) and private full bathrooms.
Myth 2: I could never afford it.
With one monthly payment for all your living expenses (except your medication), the new communities are surprisingly affordable. Even housekeeping and transportation are included (you don’t need a car!) In Santa Clara County there are 48 senior communities, 22 of which are less than 5 years old or under construction, so it’s absolutely a “buyer’s market” with plenty of location options across various price points.
Myth 3: There are waiting lists that will take years and huge “buy-in fees.”
Not true! While a few of the Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) from the 1970s do have waiting lists and large buy-in fees, CCRCs are no longer the best option for many people, as they can be cost prohibitive and may require you to move when your needs change. With the number of newer senior communities in Santa Clara County, there are now many options to consider across a range of locations, services, and price points.
